About My Approach
My approach to therapy is a product of my experience, both personal and professional. My journey in mental health began over a decade ago as a volunteer for the Rape Crisis Center in San Antonio, Texas. Since then, I have worked in social science research, at domestic violence shelters, in drug treatment centers, within the social justice system, and for employee assistance programs in the Seattle area. Every experience has helped me learn, and also taught me how little I know.
My clinical training has been focused on working with Axis II disorders, as well as with the long-term symptoms of trauma, both from childhood and adulthood. I would consider myself an eclectic therapist, and I borrow heavily from Acceptance-Commitment Therapy, Existential Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy.
In approaching each client, I do my best to balance the pragmatic with the exploratory. I believe that homework can be a valuable tool for doing work outside the session, but our work together may be structured, or it may be experimental. I will ask questions, but will also provide space for you to explore your answers with me. As an artist and writer, I believe strongly in the power of expression to help link us to our darker and softer sides, and I am happy to bring in your tools to our work together.
The ultimate goal of therapy is to find and embrace the authentic self as much as possible. While this does not guarantee happiness, it does provide the best venue for a full and peaceful life. There is no one way that works for everyone, so we will find your way together.
